SHOOTING & DEVELOPING
What is Remjet?
Remjet is a protective layer on motion picture film. It is an integral part of cinema film stock, as - unlike photographic film - motion picture film moves REALLY FAST through a camera (at usually 24 frames per second - that's fast!) - so Remjet is required to protect the film from scratches, sparks igniting in the camera, etc. OUTSIDE of cinema, how does remjet affect photography? We have seen the infamous red halation that comes with CineStill film which is really beautiful in its own right. However, we wanted to provide an option for photographers who are looking for a cleaner, more cinematic, more traditional look! And so, we opted to keep the anti-halation properties of the Remjet layer, which prevents that red glow around light sources.
How do I develop with Remjet?
The Remjet layer must be removed before developing the film! If you are taking the film rolls to film lab, you must inform the lab that the roll has a remjet layer and can damage their machines if they do not process it correctly. If you are hand-processing your film, there is a fast and easy Remjet removal process using baking soda or even laundry detergent - which adds just one more step to your development process. If you are unsure about anything regarding this Remjet layer, PLEASE contact us directly before developing your film. We are always happy to help!
Which labs develop cine-film with Remjet?
We take all our film stock to RGB Pixel Lab, based in Johannesburg, which is a real stalwart analogue laboratory that has been around for decades. We recommend sending your film directly to them. If you are based in Cape Town, it is worth calling your local film lab and enquiring if they are able to process Vision cine-film with their remjet layer.
I'm hand-developing (Yay)! What chemicals do I need to process each film?
For the Vision colour film, you may develop with the usual C-41 chemical process. Even though motion picture film stock is designed for ECN-2, the C-41 works very well, if not better, for photographic purposes as you will land up with a more saturated and contrasty image than ECN-2. ECN-2 is also a very finicky process, which is very strict in terms of chemical-temperature and development time, and the chemicals are rather hard to source in South Africa.
For the Double X black and white stock, even though it is designed for Kodak D-96, it is compatible with most black and white film developers such as the Kodak D-76 and HC-110. If you're unsure of how to develop this new film stock, please contact us directly for any help.
